Friday Fictioneers – A Lion Sleeps Tonight

ff290715A sea of candles dance in the warm, evening breeze. Outside the Ranger’s cabin a small girl carefully places her soft toy at the foot of the growing shrine. Here on the edges of the Hwange National Park people have gathered to mourn.

A few short miles away, under star-filled skies, six hungry cubs patiently await their loving father’s return. Across the oceans, one man pauses to reflect upon his actions, question what he and others do in the name of sport.

Out on the silent, still plains, Cecil roams free – free from man’s inhumanity; forever the king of his jungle.

These words form my entry into Friday Fictioneers photo prompt challenge. They also form my tribute to a majestic lion who no longer wanders the plains of the Hwange National Park. Rest in Peace, Cecil.
